Dealing With The Loss Of A Pet

Posted by User Imageroxxymetal - March 21st, 2008

In my last post I said there was another reason why I have been away for awhile other than my illness. I just recently had to put my beautiful 14 year old Himalayan cat to sleep because he was really in bad shape due to what we believe is kidney failure, which is what many cats die from when they get to that age. His name was Baby Boy and I will be posting some photos of him at a later time for all of you to see.

Baby Boy had been experiencing symptoms of kidney failure for awhile now so I knew it was only a matter of time. I had been spending most of my time with him and taking care of him because he had become so fragile. He had lost so much weight that he was having trouble getting around. I was hoping that he would pass here at home where he is comfortable but after he started bleeding from the mouth I knew I had to do something. So with tears in my eyes I picked his fragile body up and went to the vet. I tried so hard to keep my composure but there was no stopping the tears! The vet was very nice and said that I was doing the right thing for him by putting him to sleep. She said his heart was strong and that he could have lingered this way for awhile but the rest of his little body was shutting down.

After he was put to sleep I brought him back home to be buried in my back yard. This has been extremely hard on me because he has been with me for 14 years and it feels like I have lost a child. That’s what I thought of him, he was my little boy. I know there are a lot of people that think I’m crazy for feeling this way but that’s just the way I feel. I care so deeply for animals, I always have. The grieving process is hard and everyone has to deal with it in their own way. Unfortunately I’ve had to go through this a couple of other times in the past few years with my 2 Rottweilers Chloe & Bud. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about them and miss them dearly!

I know that no other Himalayan will ever replace Baby Boy but I can’t imagine not getting another Himalayan. They are so beautiful and have the sweetest personality! So if anyone has any Himalayan kittens for sale or knows of someone that does please let me know. I live in Virginia but I know there are a lot of breeders that will ship the kittens for an additional fee. Of course I would rather find someone local but I haven’t been having a lot of luck so far. Usually by the time I find out that someone has Himalayan kittens for sale they are already spoken for so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!!

  1. I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a loved pet and family member seems to be happening to a lot of people lately.

My DH and I treat our cats as kids and I don’t know what we’d do without either one right now.

  4. I don’t think it’s crazy either. Our pets are always there for us and it’s hard when we lose one. I think you did the right thing but that doesn’t make it easier. Hugs!

  5. I lost my baby dog after about 14 years a week or so ago. It broke my heart. Unconditional love is something to be prized and our little animal buddies sure provide lots of it.

    Angels all around your kitty.

  6. I am sorry about your cat. Losing a pet you love is like losing a family member b/c they are your family. I hope you feel better. My 18 year old cat died of cancer and it was horrible so I know how you feel. Heidi

  7. There will always be people who will have no idea of what it is like to lose a pet. They will not believe that the loss of a pet can equal the loss of the child. But there are also a lot of us who know what you mean. We have been there… we know how bad you are hurting. My prayers and wishes are with you and Baby Boy.

  9. My sincere condolences.

I can understand how it feels.

I just lost a pet myself recently.

    Her name was Baby Girl.

Can’t remember the exact birth date, but she was born in 1996, passed away 8:10am 22 March 2008.

It was a sad day for me back then. Even sadder when I am not around when she took her last breath. I was out stations at my Darling’s home town.

  10. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Baby Boy. I have a cat who is also part Himalayan and I cannot imagine what I would do without him. It is truly the highlight of my day when I pull into my driveway and see him laying in the window. I wish you the best, and know that you will never be able to replace your Baby Boy, but at least if you find another cat it will hopefully provide you with some joy.

  14. I’m sorry for your loss. I’ve lost three of my babies in the last three years and the grieving process can be made so much more difficult by the fact that not all people are animal people and so therefore don’t understand how truly painful the loss can be. I wish you all the best in the days ahead :)

  15. It’s what everyone says..but I am so very sorry for your loss.

Only people who have loved a pet understand the depth of loss you must be feeling. Love for our pets is a pure kind of love, uncomplicated and without any ambivalence. They give so much more to us then we can say, asking so very little in return…

As a feline only vet tech I have learned, its going to hurt for as long as it takes, but when you are ready you can bring another fur person into your home and honor the memory of your Baby Boy by giving him or her the best life possible.

  16. I recently lost my cat Sweetie Pie so I know how you are feeling. I planted a fig tree on her grave. Soon I will be able to eat figs she has blessed with her spirit.

The grief does pass and then you are left with all the wonderful memories of your beloved fur friend.

    My thoughts are with you.

  17. I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my Himalayan, Sebastian, more than 10 years ago and I still cry when I think of him. He had to be put down for the same reason, kidney failure. It was so sad. He was the sweetest thing ever, smart too, and of course beautiful. He didn’t even make it to his first birthday. Thank you for your post, I always blamed myself because I took him everywhere with me, including international travel. I always thought that had been the cause.

  18. Hey Roxxy, I just came across this article about the lose of your cat. I also have a Himalayan named O’s and he is the love of my life. He is a seal point, with that dark little face and tail walking around like he’s king of the house (he is). O’s only 8 years old but he still seems like a baby to me. I hope you have found a new kitten by now. There is nothing like a baby Himalayan is there, they almost look like a ewok or something from Mars, sooo cute and expressive. Good Luck and I can relate.
